Welcome and Introduction
My name is Michael Qu, and I am in my 4th year at UVIC studying a music major with a minor in arts. However, unlike most music students or musicians that are dedicated to just one or 2 genres, I learn every genre. This also applies to art styles as well, when I create artwork, I don’t just paint, I make video arts that prove a point, I take photos of obscene places or write philosophical articles that looks nonsense at the surface, because I blend philosophy and art together. A good artist fuses it’s own philosophical viewpoints with the artwork it creates to send a deep message to the audience.
When it comes to music, I play classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, hip hop, Bollywood, choral, orchestral and any of the genres that I can transcribe to the piano. Outside of classes, I teach piano lessons, perform at random gigs, and occasionally hold my own concerts. My last self held concert took place on August 7th, 2025 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
My favorite hobbies include cycling, hiking, attending concerts, and traveling. I own an ebike myself and during summer it’s not uncommon for me to bike for a day and cover up to 50 miles and then randomly bump into a cycling club or concert which I will then stop for a few hours. Those are my most satisfying days. The bike club that I know of that operates in the city is GoByBike by Capital Bike, they sometimes even hold sessions at UVIC on campus to educate others about the importance of cycling.
